What is Plate Processing?
An Offset Plate Processor is designed for the high speed production pf positive or negative pre-sensitized
offset plates. Although offset plate processors greatly reduce plate production times, the quality remains
high and un-affected.
The capabilities of different plate processors vary however these processors are compatible with a wide
range of PS plate brands. The essential function of Offset Plate Processors is to develop plate templates
which are utilized in combination with Lithographic printing presses (like the Heidelberg Speedster CD 102)
in order to produce great, high resolution prints within the CMYK colour range.
Computer to Plate (CTP) is a streamlined process with which the processor takes the finalized file and out puts it
directly to a plate. Both Thermal and Violet CTP technologies utilize Laser Diodes to transfer an image onto a plate.
The difference between the two technologies is each utilizes a different laser colour and the wavelength of the light
emitted by these lasers differ. Violet plates are light sensitive and thus utilizes fewer laser diodes. As a result
Thermal technology can often be faster at executing jobs.
Plates produced by Offset Plate Processors are wrapped around a cylinder within an Offset Printing Press.
This cylinder is known as the Plate Cylinder. Both ink and water are required in order for the ink to
successfully coat the Plate. The Offset Plate then transfers the ink to a rubber blanket which in turn
transfers ink to paper.
